Manchester United Team News:
Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Paul Pogba are back for Manchester United’s Europa League semi-final first leg at Celta Vigo.
Defenders Smalling and Jones have been out since sustaining injuries on England duty in March, while Pogba missed Sunday’s match against Swansea with a muscle complaint.
Eric Bailly is fit despite being forced off in that match and Juan Mata is in contention, but Luke Shaw is out for the rest of the season with a foot injury. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Tim Fosu-Mensah remain absent, while Marouane Fellaini is available as his suspension only applies to domestic matches.
Paul Pogba was protected especially for Celta and has to start beside Ander Herrera. Juan Mata has usually enhanced United’s attack this season and would be a worthy starter after resuming full training.
Anthony Martial was probably United’s best attacker at Swansea and should continue on the flank. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is United’s Europa League specialist and is a must while Marcus Rashford is the obvious centre forward.
It is a boost for United that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are fit enough to travel, but this is a huge game and to throw them in immediately would be a big risk – especially when Eric Bailly and Daley Blind have performed well.
Juan Mata’s return is welcome, and the decision to leave him on the bench against Swansea looked to have been made with this fixture in mind. Marcus Rashford is the obvious candidate to start up front while Henrikh Mkhitaryan has saved some of his best form for this competition.
MUN (Probable XI): De Gea, Valencia, Blind, Carrick, Darmian; Herrera, Pogba; Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Mata; Rashford
Celta Vigo Team News:
Celta Vigo boss Eduardo Berizzo said his side need to be “faithful to who they are” if they are to overcome United across the two legs.
“My team has a strong identity and the players believe in it,” said the former Argentina defender.
“The identity is about a lot of possession, a lot of pressure and a desire to win the ball back quickly when we lose it.”
The second leg is on 11 May at Old Trafford. The winners meet Ajax or Lyon at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Wednesday, 24 May.
CEV (Probable XI): Álvarez; Mallo, Cabral, Fontas, Jonny; Hernández, Radoja, Wass; Aspas, Guidetti, Sisto
